Coastal Engineering

Shoreline erosion is a critical problem in coastal communities nationwide, with the coastline retreating on the average of 1-5 ft per year.  Left unaddressed, shoreline erosion endangers roads, homes, and other infrastructure.  This problem will likely be made worse by any rise in sea levels.  Our staff includes experts in analysis of coastal processes and design of coastal structures and living shorelines, including:
  • Shoreline surveying and erosion risk assessments;
  • Wave environment prediction based on real-time measurements and historical data;
  • Protective structures such as breakwaters, bulkheads, and seawalls;
  • Living shorelines combining aquatic vegetation with rock sills, offshore segmented breakwaters, and beach fill;
